Sim only contracts have taken off massively in the past few years and this is totally understandable, as you can make huge savings. They are great when your phone has finished the original contract, but you want to get a further year’s use out of your phone before upgrading.
Vodafone has some great Vodafone Basics plans, which are pretty hard to find on their website. Not surprising really because these plans offer fantastic value for money.
So let’s take a look at these plans and what they offer. Of course, there is always a catch with Sim only deals this cheap. So we’ll also take a look at what the plans do not include.
If you’re looking for a new Sim Only deal but want to spend as little as possible each month. Then you’ll definitely not go wrong with these plans. They are called Vodafone Basics for a very good reason. They offer you the complete basics and anything else is an added cost.
This means you’ll need to make sure the things that will cost you extra is not something you’d plan on using too often. If they are then you’ll need to consider whether these plans would save you money in the long run.
WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED IN VODAFONE BASIC SIM ONLY DEALS
So let’s take a look at what is not included in Vodafone Basic Sim Only deals. If none of these is a big concern for you, then the deals on offer are fantastic value for money.
NO ROAMING OR INTERNATIONAL CALLS
The first thing you’ll need to consider is whether you would want to use your mobile phone abroad. Vodafone Basics does not allow you to use your phone for roaming.
If you choose a Vodafone Basics plan you need to ensure you are comfortable with not being able to use your phone abroad. There is no option to pay extra for roaming, it simply is not an option. The only calls you can make while abroad are emergency calls.
You are also unable to make international calls on a Vodafone Basics Sim Only plan. So if you’ve friends or family abroad who you speak with often, these plans may not be right for you.
NO OTHER PROMOTIONS OR OFFERS CAN BE USED
If you sign up to a Vodafone Basics Sim Only deal you cannot use any other discounts or promotions.
You’ll also not be able to use any flexible upgrade options with a Vodafone Basics plan.
PREMIUM CALLS AND MESSAGES
You’ll not be able to make any premium calls on your plan. This is any number starting with 09. Premium messages are also not allowed.
This also includes MMS and Mobile Payment Software.
There is always a time when you need to call a contact centre and the number starts with 084 or 087. If you’re lucky, you get through to someone straight away. However, we all know that sometimes you can be on hold for ages.
Calls to these numbers cost 55p a minute with an access charge and service charge on top of that. So if you need to contact these numbers on a regular basis, you would need to think carefully about whether a Vodafone Basics plan will save you any money in the long run.
If you rarely make outgoing calls to these numbers. It may still work out much cheaper for you than a more expensive Sim, which includes free Non-Geographical numbers.
FREE PHONE NUMBERS
This is something that frustrates almost everyone. You see free phone numbers advertised and you get a nasty surprise when the bill arrives.
Luckily, the law was changed in the UK, so freephone numbers starting with 0800 or 0808 must now be free on UK mobile phones.
However, you need to be careful because freephone numbers to 0500 are still charged at 55p on the Vodafone Basic plans.
There may be other charges if you use specific services. If you do use a specific service, which is not mentioned here. Then you should look into this further before purchasing any plan.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN VODAFONE BASIC PLANS
So we’ve taken a look at what’s not included and if you’re still reading this it must mean you’ve not been put. Well, if that’s the case it’s great news for you because these plans offer amazing value.
The great news is that all of these plans include tethering. Tethering allows you to use your mobile data on other devices. However, you should be careful because mobile tethering can easily use up your data.
THE VODAFONE BASIC PLANS
There are currently three Vodafone Basic Sim Only deals available over a 12 month period. All of the contracts include the following.
PLEASE NOTE: The prices and plans are correct at the time this article was written. Vodafone can change the prices or remove the plans at any time without prior notice.
£6 PER MONTH
The cheapest plan at just £6 per month includes unlimited calls and texts. It also includes 1.5GB of data.
If you use your phone to use Facebook on a daily basis when out and about the data on offer should be enough. However, if you use your phone to stream music or videos then you may want to consider a plan offering more data allowance.
£8 PER MONTH
For an extra £2 per month, you can get double the amount of data. You also get unlimited calls and texts.
The 3GB of data available on this plan should be fine if you use your phone for social media such as Facebook. You may also find it may be enough if you like to stream music.
It’s unlikely this plan would offer you enough data if you stream videos on a regular basis. You also need to consider a lot of Facebook posts now include videos, and all these videos will use up your data very quickly.
£10 PER MONTH
If you need more data then you can opt for the most expensive Vodafone Basics plan at £10 per month. Of course, you get unlimited calls and text. You also get 5GB of data.
This amount of data should mean you’ll be fine if you use your phone for social media and streaming music. It may also be enough for streaming short videos, as long as you’re not intending streaming videos on a daily basis.
HOW TO GET THESE DEALS
Finding these deals on the Vodafone website is pretty difficult. This is obviously because they would prefer you to get a more expensive plan. However, the link below will take you directly to the page.
You’ll be happy to know all of these plans come with data capping. This means if you use the data included in your plan, you’ll no longer be able to use data until the following month.
This is to help you avoid additional costs for the usage of data outside the data provided by the plan you choose.
You can turn this off but it will mean you’ll be charged for any additional data you use. If you decide to do this you’ll be charged £6.50 for every extra 250MB used.
If you’re looking for a sim only deal that costs very little then a Vodafone Basics Sim Only deal may be right for you.
If you’re not too interested in using your phone abroad and only contact non-geographical numbers a couple of times a year, then you could be making huge savings with these plans.
However, to avoid costs spiralling out of control. You should be very careful before removing the data cap. An extra £6.50 for 250MB may not sound like much, but you’d be surprised how quickly data can be used when using the internet.
